Saturday: Market Day in any part of Ireland. What's happened to the pigs... there are no fat pigs but there is:
Buffalo Mozzarella .... buffalo raised in the craggy fields of south west Ireland. The Gubeen Family of Schull www. have a whole line of cheeses from Soft Goats Cheese, to Smoky and Mild cheese (texture of Gouda) to Hard Cheese and then a Goats Milk Roquefort.
On the tasting scale:
Soft Goats Cheese..... creamy, smooth, dazzling white in a loaf Rating: More Please
Crozier Goats Milk Roquefort soft, subtle, tangy, cannot stop eating Rating: Really Lovely
Oak Smoked (Gouda) Gubeen ... semi soft texture. Very smoky, curls at the back of the tongue, with a bite. Distinctive cheese palate required: Rating: Very Nice
Coolia Hard Cheese ... sour bite, crunchy texture, needs a really good red wine with it. A winter cheese with bread and soup. Rating: A Little Opinionated
We also picked up some Irish cut bacon for breakfast. They raise cows, goats, wild boar as well as the cheese. Check out the web site to see Gubeen's wonderful story.
But what is a market foray if you can't have a tasting and coffee. We decided on a sweet tasting, (after all it was lunch time...) from the bakery and coffee stand. .
SO in case you need a tasting guide..... Rating
Sweet scone with raspberry jam : Excellent
Carrot Cake (carrot cake tasting contender) Not quite as good as Manning's
Lemon and Polenta Cake Seriously Good
Flap Jack (oatmeal cookie w seeds & fruit Nice
And of course if we are by the Atlantic Ocean so there are fish..... Really ugly fish.. monk fish.... but GOOD
